Mariscada, Portuguese Seafood Stew

This recipe is a classic Portuguese dish. It’s authentic, delicious and full of childhood memories! 

 Ingredients:

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 large red pepper, thinly sliced
  • 3 large garlic cloves
  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • dash of cayenne pepper
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 (15oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 1 cup chicken stock
  • 1 bay leaf
  • hand-ful fresh cilantro
  • 2 lbs. white cod fish
  • 1 lb. lobster tails
  • 2 lbs. shrimp, peeled and de-veined
  • 2 lbs. scallops
  • 1 lb. little neck clams

Directions:

  1. In a large Dutch oven, sauté onion and red pepper in olive oil until softened. Stir in garlic and red pepper flakes and cook for a couple minutes. Season with salt, pepper, paprika and cayenne pepper.
  2. Stir in tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, white wine and chicken stock. Add in bay leaf and cilantro. Bring to a simmer.
  3. Add in cod fish, lobster tails, scallops and shrimp, cover pot and cook for about 5 minutes. Then, add in clams and cover pot again. Cook for about 5 minutes or until clams open up. Serve with rice.

Makes 6 servings.
